METAL CHURCH - Metal Church (1985)

1. Beyond the Black
2. Metal Church
3. Merciless Onslaught
4. Gods of Wrath
5. Hitman
6. In the Blood
7. (My Favorite) Nightmare
8. Battalions
9. Highway Star

One of the most remarkable debut from any metal band. The opening combo of Beyond The Black and Metal Church is pure metal nirvana; such a powerful display of dual guitar work and David Wayne's vocals fit the mood and music like a glove. Merciless Onslaught shows just how good this band is, Kirk Arrington's insane drum work really shines on this one; this song easily runs neck to neck with ANVIL's March Of The Crabs for one of the best metal instrumental song ever recorded. Gods Of Wrath slows the pace down but shows how mature and diverse the band already was at this early stage of their career. Then the band proceeds to hit you back with a full-on metal attack all the way till the end of the album which ends with an insane cover of DEEP PURPLE's Highway Star. Terry Date's production sounds almost live in the studio and give this album a timeless vibe. Truly one of the best Metal release of all time.

P.S. The original German vinyl pressing includes the bonus track Big Guns

i perfect debut and, as stated already, a timeless classic.  How would it be to start your career having the opening track on your debut album be one of the greatest metal songs in history!  Beyond the Black is an absolutely awe striking powerful anthem! devilbang

I love the lyrics on this album too.  Battalions if pretty brutal in that way.  Some great war anthems.

To these ears, the best Metal Church album ever.  For a time in the 80's, I probably enjoyed The Dark a bit more, but over time, this easily gets the most spins-- a very strong album, particularly for a debut.

I've always loved the euro version with "Big Guns"-- that song and David Wayne rule-- "BIG GUNS!  GONNA BLOW YOU A WAYYAAAYYY!  GREAT! BIG! GUNS!"

My favorite song would be somewhere between Beyond the Black, Metal Church, Gods of Wrath, or Battalions...

Along with one of the very dumbest album covers of all time comes one of the very best Metal albums ever.

I bought The Dark with extreme anticipation when it first came out (hoping somehow it'd be as good as the debut) and was so disappointed I never bought another from the band.

Did see them live once opening for Metallica on The Dark/MOP tour. Terrible sound for both bands, but still glad I saw them.

Who has ever heard a better drum sound than is recorded on that album? Not I!   devilbang
