This is Part 2 of my series of "Bands that I only like one album from, but that album is certainly in my Top 30 or so all time"
I friggen LOVE this album. I remember being blown away the first time I heard it shortly after it came out. It was just what the doctor ordered for me so to speak. Great mix of fantastic riffs with some awesome vocals by Anselmo.
My favorite tune always changes, today it's Psycho Holiday.
Oddly enough, I never could get into any other Pantera (or Pantara if you're lesbo
). I was always intrigued at how they got heavier with each record, but I continued to feel that the songwriting suffered as a result. Just not as memorable overall. I enjoy tunes from all Pantera albums, just not as a whole like I enjoy this one. Plus, I love Anselmo's singing thrashy voice, not so much the tough redneck voice.
For me, this is one of those albums that when it comes on you don't play it just once. You have to play it at least twice. That's the mark of a great album. When you've heard it thousands of times and when it's done the only thing you want to do is listen to it again.
And yes, Exhorder blahblahblahblah.

F@#$ING LOVE this album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my favorite by the band!! While it does not contain my favorite song by them (that is actually a hairband sounding song
) this is a wicked sounding album from start to finish.
Great choice Thor! I was blown away the first time I heard this. I could not believe this band had progressed so much from the Power Metal album to Cowboys from Hell. Being a fan from their beginnings, I was so proud for them.

Amazing album!
What a step-up from Power Metal!!! Like a whole different band really... And that Terry Date production was such a wall of sound.
PANTERA catapulted themslelves at the forefront of the metal scene with this one.
The title track, Primal Concrete Sledge, Domination and The Art Of Shredding are probably my faves, but the whole album is great.
Although, I always have a hard time deciding if I like Cowboys From Hell or Vulgar Display Of Power better...

I've still never heard the pre-Cowboys material.
A buddy of mine has Power Metal and it's an excellent Judas Priest style album. Phil's vocals rule and are as excellent as you'd expect considering how good he sounded on Cowboys. I wish I had those just to open some people's eyes to the band's origin. I wouldn't be surprised if I enjoyed some of it as well. I've heard good things about I Am The Night.
As for the classic at hand, Cowboys is a solid album with some incredible songs. I like the fact that they still have a crap load of melody, Dime's solos are traditional and tasteful and Phil really sings. Not a bad song on it. It's untainted and not nearly as pretentious as what was to come. After this album their attitude spent the rest of their career competing with the music for the spotlight.
Even so, it's second to The Great Southern Trendkill on my Pantera list. For some reason I've always loved TGST. I'm not even a big fan of this band. Those two are the only two I listen out of their widely known material.

That's my favourite, as well.
VDoP
number two. But
Cowboys From Hell
is incredible, yes. A true milestone album in the annals of heavy metal rock. Dimebag was such a talent. Hails!
