That Batman looks really cool ... Man, I haven't read any comic/graphic-anything for a few years now.  Ever since Spawn started sucking I lost my overall interest in the genre.

I've got to be honest.  As much as I love Spawn - or what I think Spawn [the saga] should be - I've always held a similar interest in Batman.  I mean, they're both pretty similar in a number of ways when you think about it.

Why I think I never got into collecting Batman, is because at the time I started reading comics, I didn't know where to start.  Spawn - a character which also appealed to me - was so much easier, in that at the time there was only the one series: Spawn.

I'd like to get into the genre again - as far as Batman goes, where might you suggest I start?

I never stopped reading comics, but I stopped being a serious collector around 1994. I buy a few graphic novels every year and really enjoy reading before going to bed. I also used to be a big SPAWN fan; I was lucky to meet Todd Mcfarlane before he left Marvel to start Image and got some issues he did for Amazing SPIDER-MAN signed at a convention. BATMAN, SPIDER-MAN, WOLVERINE and HELLBOY are still personal faves. Comics are like Metal in a way, once you're hooked it's hard to give up the addiction!

Where to start with Batman?

BATMAN YEAR ONE by Frank Miller and David Mazuchelli is an absolute classic and probably the best place to start:

The Killing Joke by Alan Moore & Brian Bolland is also an acclaimed classic:

And possibly one of the best mini-series collected in one volume, BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN
