At the cookout a few weeks ago I went on a rant about how I find a lot of the albums today to be a collection of similar songs rather than a journey through different moods and changes.  Lets say you put on a metalcore album, it's pretty much 10 songs that are very, very similar.  I find that with a lot of the black metal albums as well.  (....but then again, that's the whole point a lot of the time).  Anyway, I brought up Master of Puppets as an example of where every songs has the Metallica sound but no 2 songs really sound the same.  Orion sounds nothing like Battery but it still fits perfectly on the album.  Operation Mindcrime is another that takes you on a journey through different moods.  One of the things I love about New Model Army is that every song is different yet it's still them.  Zeppelin is another good example of this kind of writing.  I guess Priest tried with Nostradamus but came up well short IMO.  Know what I'm getting at here?

So, are there any albums out now where each song is different in both tempo and feel and yet still has a cohesive feel to the whole thing?  It doesn't even have to be metal.  I'm just looking for something to get me out of my "I'm bored with 95% of new music funk".

Anything.

The thing that triggered the idea was listening to a few of the songs you guys were recommending in the other thread.  Some of the vocals were going different places but the music was pretty linear (if that makes any sense).

Blind Guardian "Nightfall in Middle Earth"  It's pretty impressive how different that album is track to track and how it all comes together.

I have a ton of albums like that but I can't imagine much of what I enjoy would be worth listening to for of you.

Agalloch-- The Mantle
Woods of Ypres-- Pursuit of the Sun, Allure of the Earth

These two immediately come to mind...

Pursuit of the Sun, Allure of the Earth is a good one that does this.
I cant get more than 10 minutes into any Agalloch without being bored out of my mind though.  lol

I would also say to a lesser extent the new Woods of Ypres (Deepest Roots and Darkest Blues) does this, though the 'dynamics' aren't as interspersed throughout the album.

Love - Forever Changes or Sixteen Horsepower(I'd suggest the 2cd live album, Live March 2001), they have nothing in common with NMA but I get a similar vibe when I listen to their music.

Master Of Puppets is indeed a great example and pretty much the first thing that comes to mind when I think of metal albums that fit this category.

Some other ones that I love that I feel are very dynamic in a way similar to how you described:

Black Sabbath- Vol. 4 (from Cornucopia to Laguna Sunrise to Changes to Supernaut.....it's really all over the place, and it works!)

The Ramones- Road To Ruin (arguably the most dynamic record they ever made)

Led Zeppelin- III (you could say most of their albums fit the bill but this one especially, IMO)

Journey- Infinity

Alice Cooper- Billion Dollar Babies

Voivod- Angel Rat ( well, Outer Limits would probably qualify too, those 2 are their most diverse I think)

Deep Purple- Fireball
