I'm going to retract the statement I made about it not being a great year for metal.  The actual fact is that since late-spring time (the arrival of my daughter, and the suspension of the main page here), I haven't been keeping pace with current releases.  So it's more accurate to say that I'm unaware of the bulk of what could very well be great music released these past months.

That said, I'm confident I can muster a stout top 5 of the year, as my listening habits have not completely receded  devilbang

Oh, it's complete plagiarism.  lol   And I usually can't stand clones but something about this band..... it's so familiar and done so perfectly that I love everything they've done so far.  Honestly, when the new Sabbath comes out, I'm not going to compare it to the classics, because that's just silly, it's been over 30 years since then, I'm going to compare it to Capricorn because to me, that's the what the sound of Sabbath in 2011 should sound like.

I totally understand what you're saying though.  For some reason, I absolutely love it.

You know, I love it too... and normally, I hate stuff that sounds like a clone.  Perhaps the difference for me is that unlike something that's clearly a commercial rip-off of a legendary band **cough**Wolfmother**cough** this feels like an homage.  This is love.  There's no way Orchid is trying to make a lot of money sounding like Black Sabbath in 1971 -- there's not much money in it.  This is tribute.  And it's done very well.

That's my read, anyway.

From professional reviewers?  Probably because they've heard all the stuff expected to drop before the end of the year.  BWBK used to publish its year-end mag at around this time, meaning it had its lists compiled and sent to the printer in November.

Decibel magazine had theirs in the latest issue I received last week.
