Cannibal Corpse - Three Up, Three Down

Now here's another well-known band with a mixed collection of material available for fans to argue over. The trend I've noticed over the years indicates that the inclusion of either Chris Barnes or George Fisher seems to determine what group of albums a fan gravitates towards. Myself, I happen to appreciate both vocalists so that's not really so much of a factor to me as other elements such as song-writing and production. Here we go ...
Top 3:
Bloodthirst
- after a string of what I consider mediocrity, this album came not only as a welcome surprise, but also as proof that Cannibal Corpse were capable of leading the charge through a new era of technically-inclined death metal.
Tomb of the Mutilated
- this album epitomizes classic death metal. It's brutal, it's dark, it's guttural, and it's obscure. Not as accessible as many of their later albums would become, regardless of how well-known this album is.
Kill
- several of the numbers on this one, while brutal as shit, are also quite catchy. It's ultimately what I like most about this album. Almost like it's got a character of it's own.
Bottom 3:
Gallery of Suicide
- It just so happens that at the time of this album's release I was going through a pretty hard break-up, so maybe that's why I don't care so much for it but I just find this album boring, and very poorly produced. Typical of late-90s USA death metal you could say ...
The Bleeding
- This album depresses me. You've got Chris Barnes making a sloppy mess, and again the production just sucks. Generic song writing as well if you ask me.
Gore Obsessed
- guh ... I actually enjoy all of their albums, but if I had to pick one more (which I do in order to complete the list) I'd pick this one on account of the fact there's nothing particularly memorable about it. Also, it came directly after Bloodthirst and my expectations were pretty high to be honest.

top 3:
-Eaten back to life-1st one i heard back in 1991,still my fave.the Thrash influences sorta make it stand alone in the catalog.
-Tomb of the mutilated-Still their pinnacle songwriting and performance-wise imo
-The wretched spawn-all the Corpsegrinder stuff is great(well..except one)but this is my favorite from the "newer"stuff
bottom 3:
-Gallery of suicide-i'm with Carl on this one.bad production and pretty generic.plus by 1998 i was totally burnt on this stuff and way more into the Gothenburg bands and Power Metal
-Vile-never cared for this one much.seemed like a step down from the 2 previous.plus i thought Corpsegrinder's delivery was way more subpar than what he had done in Monstrosity.
-Butchered at birth-bought this the week it came out...and i HATED it,and nearly 20 years later i'm still not fond of it.totally overbearing suffocating production, and Barnes here is the epitome of "cookie monster" vocals, the kinds non-Death Metal fan completely make fun of.but i will say the songs are great, just on live recordings or a live show.

This isn't easy. CC is my favorite death metal band....hell, one of my favorite bands period.
Just about ANY of the Corpsegrinder era albums could be in the top 3. Right now (in no real order):
Kill --Everything about this album is over the top. The songs, the songwriting, the hooks, the FUCKING PRODUCTION. Pat and Rob now make up one of the best guitar duos in the metal world.
The Wretched Spawn --Not much to say here. Just an amazing album.
Gore Obsessed--Something about this album just works for me. Took a while before it did, but now I love it. PIT OF ZOMBIES!!!
Not to say I don't like these albums...I most certainly like them a LOT...but the Barnes era will always be at the bottom of the list:
- Tomb of the Mutilated
- The Bleeding
- Butchered at Birth

Null vote for me, only own 5 CCs...
Favorite would be Kill, though....

I know I have one or two albums form them but they never did much for me. I watched that Centuries of Torment documentary and I thought that was fantastic. I really dug that. They seem like really cool people. But it wasn't enough to have me explore their discography.

I hate to admit it, but I could never listen to a whole CC album.
I just don't dig this band at all! They are proficient musicians, but their technical death metal approach leaves me cold; no pun intended...

Man, how could I forget about
Pit of Zombies
... not to mention
Savage Butchery, Hatchet to the Head, Dormant Bodies Bursting, Mutation of the Cadaver
... There are a few moments on the album that unfavorably resemble
Gallery of Suicide
, but otherwise I don't know what I was thinking putting this in my bottom three ... I think if I had to, I might put ... *spins a wheel*
Vile
in there ... I love that one too ...
