Last weekend I was someone's car and was handed their iPod to find something to listen to. Browsing through it, I noticed they only had between 1 and 5 songs from most of the bands. And a lot of those were their "signature songs" - total 'best of' city.

It got me thinking...what is the thought process here?

a) "Eh...I checked out the full album, but I only really like these 3 songs."

-or-

b) "I really like these 3 songs, but eh...I have no interest in checking out the full album."

Either way, it's very different from how I approach music.  It's pretty much all or nothing for me. If I hear some awesome songs from a band or album, my immediate reaction is to start acquiring all of it. If I don't end up liking the majority, the likelihood of me returning to said band or album with any regularity is slim. There aren't too many bands in my collection that have just a "few songs" I like, and 99% of what's on my iPod is full albums.

I'd imagine this approach is fairly common for most of us music fiends, but I'm surprised by how often I find the other phenomenon.

Discuss!

Or don't!

Those are your options.

Talking about Amon Amarth yesterday..... I really love the song "The Pursuit of Vikings" but most of the other stuff doesn't grab me the same way (which is odd because everything they do sounds very, very similar).  I have that song on a few different playlists but nothing else from the band.  It's not like I don't like the other songs they have, it's just..... that's THE song I want to hear from that band.  There are a few other bands like that for me but for the most part it's always full albums with an occasional skip of a song or two.

When it comes to metal I'm not interested in single songs.  Albums are still important to me.  On the rare chance there is ONE song I like by a band I'll just youtube it when in the mood.  Which is rare because I have like a gazillion full albums that rule my face off non stop.  devilbang devilbang

I mostly have full albums on my iPod, aside from a few classic bands that have a huge discography, I create custom playlists for bands like The Beatles, The Who, Yes, Rush, Deep Purple, Sabbath and a few more...

Last weekend I was someone's car

Holy shit, you're a Transformer?!?!   Buck Teeth

Anyway, I'm definitely more of an album listener too, but I do have a few singles or doubles scattered throughout my iPod.  Frankly, I hardly ever play them so I have no idea why I leave them on.  I'm acquiring a 16 gig iPhone in the next few weeks, so while I'll probably keep my 32 gig iPod Touch, it won't be a daily carry anymore and I'll have to slim my collection down.  Methinks most of these "one-offs" won't find their way onto the new iPhone.

I bet there's a post just like this on some non-music related board saying how some guy in their car only listens to full albums.

And everyone that responds can't believe that people actually listen to music like that anymore.  lol

I load full albums, but tend to listen to only certain songs for a lot of artists once a record gets a spin or two.

Funny that Amon Amarth is mentioned here.  I have about three of their records, but I tend only to listen to Death In Fire... or, if I listen to a full record from them (very rare), it's just Versus The World.

One good things about this iTunes era is that it shows me how many songs I actually listen to.  It's not as many as I would have thought.  Not many bands inspire me to listen to complete records.
