We're in the initial stages of planning a trip to NYC for 2 (no kids).
What is known:
1) We will be staying in Manhattan, either 4-5 nights (probably 5)
2) We obviously will be cabbing/subwaying/walking-- no rental car
3) This will either be spring/summer/early fall

We are looking at either taking the train up which would put us at Penn Station (which would be super sweet), but it is actually cheaper to fly in (and saves many hours, too).

Looking at a map-- LaGuardia obviously looks like the closest airport-- anything to be gained/evened-out by flying in elsewhere (Newark, JFK, anywhere else)?

Any recommendations/suggestions?

The last time I was in NYC I was 16 and with my older brother who drove us into Brooklyn where we parked and we walked/subwayed everywhere...

Can't help you on the airports, but I'd recommend any of the museums.  The Natural History Museum is fantastic.  Taking a trip up the Empire State Building is worth it as well.

Are you into guitars at all?  Rudy's Music has two locations and is filled with some of the nicest guitars you'll ever see in one place.

The passing up on a rental car is a fantastic idea.  Rental cars in NYC are totally ridiculous.

Pat, you might want to look at some hotels away from the city.  Staying in the city can get quite expensive too.  sick

But, anything in NY is wayyyy too expensive...except the subway token. A slice of cheesecake can run you $15, and that was 8 years ago for me.  hammerhead

Nah, this part is a must for us-- we plan on being out and walking/hitting the subway all day, every day we are there and we want to be 'right in the middle'.

Well then, I'm interested to see what kind of rate you will get for 5 days.  I would say you will be doing fantastic if you can get a hotel rate for $150/night.

LaGuardia is the airport we used, just seemed closer to the city.  Also stayed at the Marriot Marquis in Times Square.  The restaurant at the top that revolves is excellent.   Take in some Broadway shows while you are there.  Or even a Yankee's game in the Bronx or where ever the hell they play now.  If you get a chance go to Dangerfield's Comedy Club one night...We had a great time there...Oh Katz Deli is AWESOME!!! If I can think of anything else, I will let you know.

Baseball is done in NY for the year.  If you're looking comedy, the Comedy Cellar or Caroline's are far superior to Dangerfields (unless you like the safer, more "family friendly" comedy bullshit).

When are you going?  I'll be playing in NYC on Thursday, 11/3 at this little club in the Village called Arlene's Grocery.  If you're around, come check us out!

Probably late August, or possibly June or maybe mid-September.  Dunno yet.
