GIMP

So, I just downloaded some image manipulation software called GIMP. My early impressions are that it's a lot like Photoshop and includes most (perhaps all or more?) of the same features with one important exception: GIMP is freeware.
I grabbed it with the intent of designing a logo. Of the folks on here who have an interest in graphic design (such as our esteemed Hellboy), what are your opinions of this software?

Let's face it, Photoshop is a monster on the budget.

I use both GIMP and PS. I usually use GIMP for quick edits or for roughing out new ideas - it's a quick way to get decent quality images. For "real" work I go to PS. PS kills GIMP in terms of final image quality (as it should, considering the price tag) and it is about a million times more stable than GIMP.

... I'm having a really hard time figuring out how to manipulate text - specifically, shape text to particular "paths" ... Youtube tutorials, here I come.

After some exposure to the software, I can say with confidence that for my own purposes (that is to say, those of an
unprofessional
nature) GIMP is fantastic. It's truly amazing that this software is free.
In case anyone was wondering
