So, I just downloaded some image manipulation software called GIMP.  My early impressions are that it's a lot like Photoshop and includes most (perhaps all or more?) of the same features with one important exception: GIMP is freeware.

I grabbed it with the intent of designing a logo.  Of the folks on here who have an interest in graphic design (such as our esteemed Hellboy), what are your opinions of this software?

i haven't used it, but I recommend it to my students when their free trial of photoshop expires.

I use both GIMP and PS.  I usually use GIMP for quick edits or for roughing out new ideas - it's a quick way to get decent quality images.  For "real" work I go to PS.   PS kills GIMP in terms of final image quality (as it should, considering the price tag) and it is about a million times more stable than GIMP.

... I'm having a really hard time figuring out how to manipulate text - specifically, shape text to particular "paths" ...  Youtube tutorials, here I come.

After some exposure to the software, I can say with confidence that for my own purposes (that is to say, those of an unprofessional nature) GIMP is fantastic.  It's truly amazing that this software is free.
