With our house, we have a nice entry/living room area with an 18 ft. ceiling. Well, over the past 5 years or so, 4 neighbors in the area have been using this area to add a loft (and about 250+ sq. ft.) to their living space.
It's now our turn. Some call it a loft, but we will be making it a bedroom.
As many of you may know, my mother-in-law passed away last summer. It's now been over a year. My father-in-law (George- who was married to her-Nancy- for 47 years) is EXTREMELY lonely.
The original plan was for George to sell his house and to move much closer to us. Well, last month he was over for dinner (We have him over for dinner now once a week) and he told us that it really doesn't matter how close he is to us in a home, that he is still going to be lonely.
So, he brought up this scenario...
He asked us if it would be O.K. for him to move into our house. He mentioned that he knows we have been wanting to build a loft but haven't had the cash. So, he brought up paying for it. I, of course, agreed.
George will be using it as his "bunker."
We had 3 estimates from contractors of 19.5, 23.7 and 37. He picked the middle guy because he will finish MUCH FASTER than the 19.5 guy. The estimate of 37 is just outlandish, We just signed the contract yesterday and construction will commence in about 4 weeks when all the permits have been finalized. So, I will be adding pictures here and there in this thread as I will be doing the same on Facebook. Oh yeah, for those that do know I love the in-laws to death and it was crushing for me personally last year when we lost Nancy. They truly have been the best in-laws I could ever ask for. So, I am very excited about the project.

Stan, absolutely. The boys will now be even closer to their grandfather, which is honestly the number one reason why Christine and I decided to do this. Also, George loves being around the boys, so it is indeed a win-win.

Well, yesterday the father-in-law went in for surgery at Fullerton. He had a tumor on the lung and the docs took out 1/3 of the right lung. The good news is that the proposed 3 hour surgery only took 2 hours and he is resting comfortably giving himself shots of morphine with the press of a button.
He'll be in for 4 days and then back to the daily routine for the retired lieutenant colonel.
I'll visit him after work today.

Just got a call from the contractor yesterday, while at city hall, he said there was another name listed at my address in the cities files.
It turns out he applied for a permit at the wrong address.
Address is fixed, but the delays begin now....apparently this will set us back about 3 days.
