Apparently it happened to me for the second time yesterday.  People bought clothes, porn and donated to Lance Armstrong.  WTFoo?

Haha it only happened to me once, back in like 2004-2005. But my bank caught it and I was flat broke anyway. I get a call from my bank asking me "Have you been to Romania any time recently?". Well, Rochester has nearby towns like Mexico, Egypt and Chili so I was like...."Uh is there a town here called Romania or like...the country?" lol. She goes "Haha no the country!" I said "Fuck no I go to college and work at Lowe's. I don't have money to go further than Egypt, NY". She laughed and said "That's what we figured. Someone tried to use your card number to make withdrawls in increments of $300.00, but there's only $24.00 left in your account." I said "Haha well that sucks for them cause I just got done Christmas shopping". They just cancelled my card, waived overdraft fees and sent me a new card. I got lucky.

A few years ago, a transaction for a plane ticket bought in L.A. appeared on my credit card,
So, I phoned my credit card company to report the transaction...

CC company: Are you sure you didn't buy this plane ticket?
Me: I'm pretty sure I would remember leaving the country...  hammerhead

Yep, it's happened to me twice.  Both times the credit card company caught it before anything went through.

The first time someone called the cc company and changed my billing address, presumably so that I wouldn't know what had happened for a month or so.  Then they tried to buy a Ford truck with my card.  The cc company and the credit bureaus were pretty cooperative during the whole mess.  The cops were a big pain in the ass though.  The cc company had told me to get a police report to document the identity theft in case any of my other accounts ended up compromised.  The cops didn't want to be bothered and wouldn't send an officer to take a report.  Fair enough.  So I went to the station to fill one out and ended up spending the better part of the day there getting ignored until they got sick of me and spent all of 5 minutes filling out a damn form.

My experience before was painless and should be this time.  I'm not liable for a cent, I get a new card in 2-3 days, Discover does an investigation over the next month or so and tells me what, if anything they found.  I'd think if these people ordered clothing and had it sent to their house they'd be easy to track.  If they were that stupid to send it to their home.  Otherwise, I wonder how they were going to get the clothes?

Actually you're generally safer using your card online than you are in a retail store. My friend had her number stolen in a small town grocery store!

Edit: Sorry, didn't notice you said "debit" card.

I had it happen to me once but the bank caught it.  Some guy typed in the numbers at a gas pump in Houston.

I have fraud protection turned on now but if I travel anywhere I need to call them before I leave to tell them where I'll be.
I found that out the hard way in England.  lol  The card was locked down the second I tried to use an ATM.

Just noticed a $200 pending charge (from like a week ago so I assume it's being investigated) from barnesandnoble.com.  I've never ordered from that site.  So, this may be my first.  Sad

Not my credit card, but I had my debit card stolen last year, but luckily my bank was able to recover the money the bastards used on it.

That's quite an odd mix. LOL

Never had my CC stolen but my Debit card has been compromised a few times now.  First time it happened they withdrew $1000 over a two day span.  Took the bank about a week to replace the funds.

Closed the investigation with nothing found. Scary that it would be that easy to not get caught. I can't believe things like that can't be traced electronically these days.
