Brian & I were talking about meeting up at that show but I've come to the conclusion that I'm just not that into the live experience anymore so I decided not to go. I had no idea you were going to be there too, I haven't seen you since the BW&BK 6 pack II!

Let me know how The Gates of Slumber performed!  devilbang

Protag-- are you talking 'in general' re: the live thing or about the last time you saw Liebling tanked off his ass and unable to perform?

Should be a killer show!  devilbang

It actually was! We weren't really expecting Pentagram to be great.  Bobby Liebling has a long history of hardcore drug use and the guy is 60, so we kind of figured it would be a novelty at best.  We couldn't have been more wrong!  The guy oozes stage presence.  Kind of a cross between Alice Cooper and Mick Jagger, passed through a coffin a couple of times.  They were tight and put on an amazing show!  It was 1,000x better than I expected.  devilbang devilbang devilbang devilbang

The Gates of Slumber were great too...what we saw of them anyway.  Their bass player's mother passed away so a roadie was filling in on bass and they only played four songs.  Those four songs were enough to sell me though.  They were really good and the singer / guitarist is extremely talented.  Very, very good!  devilbang devilbang devilbang

Earthride sucked.  Or, more to the point, the singer sucked.  The rest of the band was actually quite good.  The drummer was tight and kicked all sorts of ass.  The lead guitarist smoked.  The singer however was wasted from the first song out.  He rambled between songs about nonsense, his vocals were shoddy as he stumbled around the stage looking for his beer. eviltongue

When we arrived Ol' Scratch was just about to come on.  Pretty crappy.  Typical screaming band full of fat guys with beards.  The singer wasn't even good at screaming and the guy they brought out to help on one song was even worse.  I'm not a fan of their kind of music, but I don't think people who were would be impressed either.   eviltongue

All said, the bands got progressively better as the night went on.  We all left feeling like we saw something special in Pentagram.  Bobby Liebling is somewhat of a legend in this area and in the Doom scene in general.  The guy is horrifying to look at but it somehow enhances his stage presence all the more.  By the end of the night we all had huge smiles on our faces.

Brian and I get up REALLY fuckin' early, and by the time we were at our respective homes and in bed we'd been up about 24 hours.  Amazingly, it was worth it and then some!

That does sound pretty awesome.

I debated going to the ATL show this weekend, but I'm just not a big enough fan of Pentagram or The Gates of Slumber to really justify it-- I enjoy both those bands, just not THAT much.

Too many bills where the lineups just don't work for me ( more times than not I want to see the opening band(s) & not the headliners). Then since I don't have a car the trip can be more than the ticket. Finally the last show I attended on Halloween last year, Metalocalypse & Mastodon, the fact that the 2 headliners had a screen show & left the stage mostly in the dark so you couldn't see the bands playing was pointless to me. Hope this isn't going to become a trend.

I hear what you're saying.  It's usually the opposite for me.  I hate sitting through 5 crappy local bands to see the headliner.  lol
