Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is always talked about as being one of the best albums of all time in black metal I decided to check it out.  It sounded like friggin' Popeye was singing, everything was sloppy, the production sucked...... c'mon, one of the best albums of al time?????  I'll admit I missed the boat with black metal but I fail to see any redeeming qualities to this album.  At all.

I totally don't get it and I guess I never will.

I think that is the point with the Black metal elitist.  THey like the fact it sounds like it was recorded in a tin can and muffled like crap.  THat is supposed to make it sound more evil.  To my ears it just makes it sound like garbage.

My problem with shitty production is that it means 2 things to me:

1) The band/producer has no idea what they're doing
2) The band doesn't give a shit

Both of those are reasons to me that the band should not have stepped foot into a studio.... even if it's a crappy studio.

I like some of that low fi black metal stuff, but that Mayhem album in particular I always thought was unlistenable due to the hilarious vocals that sounds like a drunk Mustaine trying to sound like a zombie or something.

I'm not really that big on Carcass or Meshuggah either for that matter.
