In 1998 and 1999 when I saw Journey live, they were live and Augeri was amazing...people were eating out of his hand.

He never was forced to sing to tapes until 2006/2007. What was happening was they were letting him sing into the mic, but what was coming through the PA were his live vocal tracks from the "Live 2000" DVD.

It was not Augeri's masterplan to fake his own singing. The band toured relelntlessly the entire time he was with them and played all the songs in their original keys. That will take it's toll on any singer (including Steve Perry himself...listen to Escape then listen to Trial By Fire...HUGE difference vocally). When he began to have problems, they should have let him rest...instead, they supplemented w/ tapes and Deen singing a few songs and kept going...eventually Augeri's voice gave out completely one night in Raleigh NC (he was singing along to his tapes, not miming). The band called in Jeff Scott Soto and, instead of finishing the tour, thanking Jeff, and letting their singer heal, they proceed to fire Augeri and hire Soto (which lasted only a few months before he was sacked).

Augeri blames himself as much as anyone for not speaking up and asking for a break, but he was most certainly not the initiator of the tape thing...his bosses were...then when they were caught, they denied it vehemently even though it was obvious...they basically got caught and fired the singer...

hmm...didn't know this story.  Thanks for the insight...

Its a shame that Augeri had to go down over that whole fiasco, where people now will remember him as the guy who sang to tapes.  Totally unfair, as he sang live without them for 98% of his tenure in the band.  He was really really good.  Watch the live 2001 DVD for proof.

Deen is an oustanding vocalist.  I respect that he doesn't want to be a frontman but damn, he could surely do it.  I'd love to hear him do a whole solo album of AOR/Hard Rock tunes with killer backup musicians.

Is indeed a shame about Augeri...I loved that guy.

As for Deen, a lot of people want him to do a solo album, but as long as he's in Journey it won't happen. Andrew McNeice (owner/operator of MelodicRock.com) was backstage w/ Journey when JSS was touring with them and when he brought up the possibility of Deen doing a solo album, he was told to not even talk about it...the exact words were "Don't even go there!"...
