I was reading some comments Jon Schaffer was making about Tim Owens and it got me thinking.  Schaffer says something to the effect that Owens did not act as a true believer but as an employee while in Iced Earth and I have to wonder how he could be surprised about this. Iced Earth is essentially Schaffer and a bunch of guys that he hired.

No one but Schaffer has any say in the direction of the band and the musical contribution from the other band members is close to zero. I think there might have been 2 or 3 songs on the last two albums that Barlow and Owens wrote the lyrics for otherwise than that it’s all Schaffer.

The fact that this is solely Schaffer’s band is what limits modern Iced Earth. Although Schaffer can be commended for his vision and his drive he would benefit from another strong songwriter or from someone that could act as sounding board. He had that in the old days with Randall Shawver co-writing quite a bit of the songs on the first 4 IE albums. The band hasn’t been the same since then.

I really use to dig IE but they have turned into a disappointment and will be until Schaffer lets someone else have a say in the band or he finally admits this is more or less a solo project.

Anyway rant over. Rant Rant

He blew a guitar up and decided he was done. It was close enough to the end of show for him to end it. Left a VERY sour taste in my mouth for a band I was VERY much looking forward too..

They also took an hour and a half for the soundcheck!  Pure rock star attitude.

Schaffer's douchbaggery is the much of the reason I don't bother with IE anymore.  Well that and the fact the last several albums have been turd city.

And I used to foam at the mouth over IE.

I listened to a Live bootleg last night of Ripper singing the Gettysburg triology and frankly he doesn't sound like he's clock punching to me. Amazing performance.

Having seen the band performed live with both Barlow and Owens, Barlow has a much better stage presence and is a much more compelling frontman than Ripper. They're both great singers in their own right, but Barlow has the X factor that so many frontmen are missing these days, and I'm glad Schaffer realized that and got him back in the band.

Is Barlow still a cop?

At PP Barlow could not sing Tim's material.  I really enjoyed the albums with Tim anyway so it was disappointing.  Both are great in their own right as vocalists though and I agree, Barlow is easily the better showman.

In regard to the comments that started the thread, Tim had to feel like an employee.  He said all he wanted to do was to contribute his ideas to the music and he wasn't allowed to do so.  Telling him to go out and sing every night and nothing more would make you feel every bit an employee.
