The expected answer is of course Tony Iommi.  I just had Heaven & Hell playing and man, that guy is just brilliant.  Hell, just the 3 notes alone that make up the song Black Sabbath is enough to justify.  How many other bands riffs can you immediately hum off the top of your head at any given time?  And dozens of them too.  Writing a cool riff is one thing but writing hundreds that transcend time is another.  His stuff is as good now as it was when it was written.

Totally agree with Release, Iommi is the true master and originator of the metal riff, no one comes even close but 2nd place would have to go to Angus Young.

Wolf Hoffmann is probably my all time fave
but I have to admit that Rick Wartell & Bruce Franklin from TROUBLE totally blow my mind!

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few big names, but all the following guys are original Riff Masters that deserve some credit for pushing Metal riffery to the next level

Dimemag
Kerry King
Dave Mustaine
James Hetfield
Gary Holt
Piggy
Chuck Schuldiner
Eric Peterson
Mike Amott
Jeff Loomis
Mikael Åkerfeldt
